Be like Netflix. Create Stability through Subscriptions.

Feb 21, 2024

I love to spend Sunday afternoons watching the newest docuseries on Netflix while folding five of the largest loads of laundry one family of four can create.

I also love my subscriptions to Amazon, Hello Fresh, Chewy, and probably at least ten others. For my business, I pay a subscription for everything from Canva to Quickbooks. I bet you do too.

There is a reason the subscription revenue model is so popular. If this is one strategy you haven’t tried yet, it’s time to give it a go.

I talked about the power of repeat services for your wellness business in my last blog - you can read that here. The bottom line is that bringing clients back in for routine services is much more valuable to your business than one-time treatments.

Once you’re focusing your offers around repeat services that bring happy clients back in routinely, it’s easy to create a subscription or membership that your clients will love.

What’s in it for you? How about consistent cash flow?! Wellness businesses can be a ride. If your medispa or chiropractic clinic was flooding you with cash in December only to turn around and dry up in January, you’re on the cash flow roller coaster. You’ll likely find that you have a few slower months throughout the year, but you don’t have to let it affect the business, much less cause you extra stress and anxiety.

Consistent monthly income from subscriptions or memberships will help smooth out your cash flow over the year.

In those traditionally slower months, you won’t be clenching your teeth while you’re running payroll or ordering inventory. While one-time treatment revenues may still be slow, you’ll have a stream of consistent, recurring revenue coming in every month to create a nice buffer for you.

Revenues will also be much more predictable, making it easier to plan out any future investments or costs in the business as you’re working to scale. You’ll know if you can afford to hire that additional employee or invest in the start-up costs for another location.

Your clients will love it too. It’s a win-win.

Offer exclusive perks, discounts, or additional services to members to make the membership or subscription program more attractive. This will not only encourage clients to participate but will also add value to their overall experience with your business.

Clients will be happy to schedule their appointments regularly because they’re already included in their budget and they know how much they’re going to be spending every month. People like predictability.

I pay a monthly subscription to my chiropractor. I like to come in bi-weekly to fix the effects of sitting all the time. My chiropractor gives me a little bit of a discount paying monthly vs. the one-time treatment price. It’s a win-win for both of us. I get the services that I want at a discount and my chiropractor gets a stable, consistent stream of revenue.

Memberships create brand loyalty.

Memberships also create a stronger connection between clients and your business. Clients will feel like they are part of an exclusive community, increasing their sense of belonging. This will create client loyalty, turning one-time customers into long-term advocates for your brand.

Creating a subscription or membership program will help you avoid the stress and anxiety those slow months can cause. You’ll smooth out your cash flow roller coaster and create stability and predictability in your business. Your clients will love it and you’ll love it too.
